About WDC Vocabulary Broker

Although research data are often carefully described by various kinds of metadata, it is not always easy to find research data from other projects which could be relevant for your own work. This is often due to the fact that even within the same scientific domain different research projects use different metadata vocabularies to describe their data.

One goal of the WDC Vocabulary Broker is to facilitate the access to research data by establishing connections between these different metadata vocabularies by means of Semantic Web technologies.

As a first step in the current prototype we are connecting SKOS-Versions of GCMD, SPASE , ESPAS , UAT and GEMET keywords by establishing <skos:closeMatch> and <skos:relatedMatch> relations by means of a yet quite simple semantic mapping algorithm. The following figures illustrate schematically terminological connections between the vocabularies from GCMD, ESPAS and SPASE.

In the next step these connected keywords will be linked to the respective datasets they describe by means of the corresponding data models or ontologies respectively. This way we hope to facilitate the access to related research data from different research projects.
