The mission of the Kansas Geological Survey, operated by The
University of Kansas in connection with its research and service
program, is to conduct geological studies and research and to
collect, correlate, preserve, and disseminate information
leading to a better understanding of the geology of Kansas, with
special emphasis on natural resources of economic value, water
quality and quantity, and geologic hazards.
The Kansas Geological Survey continues to study the state's
resources and prepare publications on its findings. Providing
research and service to Kansas since 1889, the Survey publishes
information on Kansas geology in books and maps, both technical
and educational. The topics of these publications include
computer science, engineering geology, geochemistry,
geohydrology, geophysics, paleontology, mineral economics, and
stratigraphy. The Survey also produces computer programs and
data bases derived from geologic investigations.
Progressively, the Survey has increased its research programs
and facilities. The main office in Lawrence employs over 80
researchers and support-staff members and 70 student
assistants. A second publications sales office and the Well
Sample Library, storing over 131,000 rotary-cutting samples from
Kansas wells, are located in west Wichita.
The State Geologist and Director of the Kansas Geological Survey
is Lee Allison.
