definition
  • The Vegetation Index and Phenology (VIP) Lab is part of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at the University of Arizona. Headed by Dr. Kamel Didan, this research Lab is supported by a NASA Making Earth Science Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) collaborative agreement. The Lab specializes in designing and generating consistent, high quality and well characterized Climate Data Record (CDR) and Earth Science Data Record (ESDR) long term multi-satellite data products in support of global change studies. The VIP Lab works to produce and validate two key land surface measurements: (1) Vegetation Index (2) Land Surface Phenology In collaboration with researchers at Boston University, University of Hawaii, NOAA/ERT Inc., and the USGS-EROS LP-DAAC the VIP Lab is currently developing and end to end system including science algorithms to produce global Vegetation Index and phenology ESDR products. The Lab is also tasked with validation and quality assurance analysis of these ESDRs. In collaboration with the US-National Phenology Network (US-NPN) and the US-Southwest Regional Phenology Network (US-SWRPN) we plan to collect and use in situ (field) data to characterize these ESDR products.
