  • Department of Materials Science and Engineering , Faculty of Engineering and Resource Science, Akita University has its origin in Akita Mining College that had been established in 1910. It was expanded to Department of Metallurgy and Department of Metallic Materials for Engineering, and further reorganized into Department of Materials Engineering and Applied Chemistry, combining with the department of chemistry. Department of Materials Science and Engineering was established in April, 1998, accompanied by re-construction of Mining College into Faculty of Engineering and Resource Science. This re-construction stood on the viewpoint of development of materials engineering in the 21st century. The aim was to develop advanced materials for the future engineering, and was to bring up engineers involved in material development.
