  • More Information: "http://www.gov.mb.ca/natres/lid/remote_sensing/" Description: The Manitoba Remote Sensing Centre (MRSC) was established in 1973. It is a section of the Land Information Centre, Department of Natural Resources, Manitoba, Canada. The MRSC mission is to provide insight, evaluation, and assessment of the state of the natural and physical resources of Manitoba through operational services which include the coordination, monitoring, and application of remote sensing technology. The centre conducts digital image processing of satellite data for resource studies, inventorying, and environmental monitoring. The centre is also responsible for the operation of the Canadian World Crop Monitoring Program and conducts all the NOAA satellite data image processing for the Canadian Global Change Program. The MRSC provides consulting, education, technology transfer, custom image analysis services, research and development, conducts project work in remote sensing and coordinates activities between federal and provincial governments. Facilities, equipment, brokerage services and joint venture opportunities to agencies and companies working in the remote sensing field are also offered. MRSC owns and/or operates a large quantity of image interpretation equipment and systems for the processing of satellite imagery. In 1993 the centre began processing GeoComp products. GeoComp is a highly automated system capable of generating precision geocoded scenes of AVHRR data and generating composites of such scenes over a multi-day period. GeoComp products are listed in the Image Inventory option on GCNet at Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS). Other products developed at the centre include detailed land use/land cover maps for Manitoba, land cover maps for all of Canada, Canada-wide NOAA daily satellite imagery dating back since 1987, and a wide assortment of other thematic maps, inventories and collections of satellite imagery from LANDSAT, SPOT, and others. Currently, the MRSC is working in the field of radar data development for purposes of assessing land use and resource inventories and to provide the necessary expertise in preparation for the launch of the Canadian RADARSAT satellite.
