- The University of Missouri system is a four-campus system (Columbia, Kansas
City, Rolla, and St. Louis) whose administrative offices are in Columbia. The
University of Missouri-Columbia (MU) was founded in 1839 and is the oldest
public university west of the Mississippi River. MU is a comprehensive,
land-grant research institution and is classified as a Research I University by
the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In 1996, over 4,200
graduate students were enrolled as candidates for master's, doctoral, and
educational specialist degrees in over 90 degree programs.
In addition to MU, Columbia is home to two other colleges -- Stephens College
and Columbia College. With a population of about 75,000, Columbia has five
major hospitals, two commercial TV stations, two daily newspapers, and a
nationally recognized elementary and secondary school system. It is located on
Interstate 70 about halfway between Kansas City and St. Louis.
