- The Meteorological Institute of Hamburg University was originally founded in
1929 and - after the break of world war two - exists as separate unit again
since 1962. It is active in the fields of physics of the atmosphere in the
widest sense and figures among the largest institutes in Germany for the
education of students of meteorology.
The Institute has taken an active part in founding the Centre for Marine and
Climate Research (ZMK) at Hamburg University, of which it is a member since
1989. ZMK is part of a larger unit, the Centre for Marine and Atmospheric
Research (ZMAW), which will also comprise the Max-Planck-Institute for
Meteorology (MPI-M). The Meteorological Institute maintains close relationship
to the MPI-M which is documented by joint personnel, joint scientific projects,
joint technical departments such as labs, a mechanical workshop and a joint
library, and by sharing rooms in the same building. Moreover, special relations
exist with the GKSS Research Centre Geesthacht,since one of their directors is,
simultaneously, full professor at the Meteorological Institute of Hamburg
University. Clearly, the science of meteorology, but also the students of
meteorology, significantly benefit from this highly interactive network.
