definition
  • The Global Environment Monitoring Unit (GEM) is one of seven scientific units that make up the Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC). IES provides scientific & technical support to the European Union's policies for the protection and sustainable development of the European and global environment; the GEM Unit delivers products and services derived from the analysis of satellite remote sensing data. These have helped the European Commission in its work with multilateral environmental agreements on climate change, biodiversity and desertification, with new initiatives to protect Europe's marine environment, to promote global forest law enforcement and to promote European space-science capabilities. The Unit, along with other research teams at the JRC, is also currently exploring new ways of using satellite and computer-mapping technologies to support long-term development in Africa.
