definition
  • The Department of Pomology evolved from the Division of Pomology, organized in 1913. The Department is charged with identifying and addressing the needs and problems related to the production of fruit and nut crops, their postharvest quality maintenance, and the utilization of their many products. The Department addresses these challenges and opportunities through research, education and extension activities by applying biological sciences to genetic improvement, production efficiency and postharvest handling of fruit and nut crops in California. Pomology is unique in the diversity of fruit and nut crops it studies under widely different soil, topographic and climatic conditions. It is the only department devoted strictly to fruit and nut crops within all agricultural colleges in the United States.
