- Initially the Spatial Science Innovation Unit has been set up as a cooperative
venture between the School of Geosciences and the Department of Archaeology's
Computing Laboratory (ACL) at the University of Sydney. This initial phase,
during 2003, involved the construction of specialist computer labs and offices
in the Madsen Building. SSIU can now act as a place to go for assistance in
using spatial data from digital sources. The next phase, beginning in early
2004, is to set about creating a collective visibility for the University's
capacity in spatial informatics, and a GIS hub for spatial data held within the
University. The data hub and the specialist computer labs provide a significant
capability for the University in advanced spatial technologies. The real focus
of SSIU, however, is on the University's intellectual capacity to combine
spatial data with theoretical knowledge to get more information than contained
in the data alone.
Considerable expertise already exists at Sydney but lacks visibility because
the talent is dispersed among the Faculties and Departments throughout the
University. Examples include Vislab, Marine and Geoinfomatics, Pedometrics in
Soil Science to name a few. Clearly this expertise can be projected better
within and beyond the University by showcasing the range of facilities and
talent as a collective package.
The SSIU is committed to bringing the benefits of GIS to all faculties and
schools both within the university and through industry linkage partnership. As
the premiere spatial investigation unit at the University of Sydney, we are at
forefront of Geospatial technology and we are able to cater for a demanding
client base of students and professionals.
