definition
  • The GEODATA CENTER is an archive of remote sensing data for Alaska and surrounding waters. The Center is operated by the Geophysical Institute and is open to the public. The GEODATA CENTER provides access to satellite imagery, aerial photography and other remote sensing image data. Major collections include: * Landsat data, primarily MSS, 1972 to present. * NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data from 1974 to present. * Alaska High-altitude Aircraft Program (AHAP), NASA color infrared and black and white aerial photography of Alaska, 1978-1986. * Miscellaneous other collections, including aerial photography, DMSP imagery, SLAR and geophysical data. The Landsat data collection includes a subset of the holdings of the EROS Data Center as well as images acquired by the Canadian Centre for Remote Sensing. Most data since 1982 has been acquired by the Geophysical Institute Quick Look Project, which operates recording equipment at the NOAA Gilmore Tracking Station near Fairbanks. Much of this data IS NOT in the EROS Data Center's data base and is therefore UNIQUE to this collection. Presently, only the Landsat data are inventoried in an on-line database. This simple system allows users to search the Geo Data Center's inventory using criteria such as satellite, path/row, % cloud cover, date, longitude, latitude, etc.,. Inquiries about non-landsat should be directed to the following contacts: Geo Data Center Staff: Rose Watabe (907) 474-7598 (SPAN, FRED::RWATABE) GeoData Center Geophysical Institute University of Alaska Fairbanks Fairbanks, AK 99775-0800 Access Procedures: The Alaska Landsat Inventory is available on-line and may be accessed by: * SPAN access by SET HOST FRED and username ALI, * contacting the system contact listed above. Ordering / Price Policy: Data products may generally be ordered for users directly by GeoData Center staff. Reproduction options include inhouse computer center and photo- graphic lab; federal repositories; and private sector firms. Reproduction charges from inhouse facilities are scaled to recover cost of reproduction. Available Distribution Media: Data are distributed on a variety of magnetic, film, and hardcopy media depending on the data type and the needs of the requestor.
