- DEIMOS satellite will be integrated into the international constellation DMC (Disaster Monitoring Constellation), which is composed of satellites from the UK, China, Nigeria, Algeria and Turkey. The combined use of the constellation satellites provides a unique capacity for Earth Observation, with more than one daily image of any place in the world. The DMC is a unique international collaboration of member nations and, through this satellite, Spain joins the existing countries in the consortium (Algeria, China, Nigeria, Turkey and the UK). Each member of the consortium owns and operates a satellite whilst co-operating with the other members of the consortium. The model of co-operation has significant benefits – it allows information generated on-board one satellite to be used by other members of the consortium. Deimos is a small earth observation satellite, which was built by SSTL to be ready for launch in the fourth quarter of 2008 and will form part of the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC). The satellite will provide imagery for commercial applications, for government use and for rapid-response following disasters. This contract with SSTL will provide Deimos with an enhanced version of the DMC wide area imaging system. The new system will image 600km wide swaths of the Earth in three spectral bands at a ground resolution of 22 meters, rather than using the standard 32m DMC imager. The contract also covers the provision of the ground system to allow operation of the satellite from Valladolid, Spain and it establishes SSTL as the launch agent for procurement of launch services. This contract is Deimos' first step into satellite ownership. Since it was formed in 2001, Deimos has grown rapidly to become one of Europe's leading Space consultancies with over 200 staff. Deimos-1 has very advanced technology, in spite of its only 100 kg weight, that allows it to achieve the following characteristics:
* 6 cameras in red, green and near infrared bands, equivalent to Landsat * High Spatial Resolution (20m) * Wide field of view (600 km) * High capacity for repeated imaging The data processing and storage system boasts a capacity of 4 GB and a high processing speed. This allows the satellite to obtain real-time data and send them to the Ground Station at a speed of 20 Mbps. High-efficiency solar panels provide electric power in any orientation relative to the Sun. The sustainable capacity of the system is 3 million km2 per day, and it can be used more intensively in case of necessity by waiting for some time between intensive zones for the battery to fully recharge. A weekly coverage of the Iberian Peninsula can be obtained, or alternatively a bi-weekly coverage of the whole of Europe; in this way, new possibilities for regular remote sensing services open up.
