The EPA's Indoor Environments Division provides information and
conducts studies on indoor air quality issues such as asthma, smoke in
homes, radon, and molds.
At the World Summit for Sustainable Development in August 2002, the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the creation of a
Partnership for Clean Indoor Air to address the serious health effects
associated with elevated indoor levels of smoke from cooking and
heating practices. Over 2 billion people worldwide use traditional
fuels for cooking and home heating. According to the World Health
Organization, this widespread use results in the premature deaths of
an estimated 2 million people annually, with women and children being
most significantly effected.
