  • The mission of the Stanford University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering continues to be execution of basic and applied research that advances the state of the profession, the education of the next generation of academic and industry leaders, and the preparation of students for successful careers in professional practice. In addition, the faculty contribute selected service to institutions and government for assessing the technical resources and promoting solutions to meet significant societal problems. In carrying out this mission our goals continue to be: 1) Providing an education, not just engineering training, by developing life-long skills, 2) Contributing to the broader education of Stanford undergraduates, 3) Integrating research and education in the graduate and undergraduate curricula, 4) Conducting cross-disciplinary research and contributing to, and helping lead, University initiatives, 5) Addressing important engineering challenges for well-functioning societies with a new focus on developing research and curricula to promote sustainable civil engineering, 6) Maintaining a culture that promotes excellence and that allows students, staff, and faculty to excel in their endeavors.
