Warnem?nde, which as a member of the Academy of Science was for
decades the most important institution for marine research in
the GDR. The scientific programme of the new institute was
dedicated to the Baltic Sea ecosystem.
The IOW has four departments representing the disciplines of
physical oceanography, marine chemistry, biological oceanography
and marine geology. An instrumentation group is affiliated with
the Department of Physical Oceanography. Jointly the departments
work on a long-term research programme.
