- The Penn State Department of Geography provides education in geography and
GIScience for graduates and undergraduates. The department also publishes a
newsletter each semester (Winter/Spring & Summer/Fall) for alumni, students,
faculty, staff, families, and friends.
Research interests of the faculty in physical geography are in the fields of
climatology, biogeography, geomorphology, landscape and restoration ecology,
and coastal and inland hazards.
The Penn State Department of Geography encourages faculty and grad student
collaboration on topics such as: synoptic climatology and climate dynamics
(climate variation), satellite climatology, climate modeling and climate
downscaling, surface water modeling and relationships with atmospheric
circulation, crop modeling and prediction for climate scenarios, and
society-climate interactions.
Research in human geography spans across many disciplines and interests,
including economics, politics, transportation, land use, development, planning,
sociology, urban issues, history, cultures, gender, and medicine.
Research in Nature-Society Geography at Penn State centers on issues concerning
global change, energy, recreation, water, environmental studies, resources,
cultural ecology, and regional geography.
Research in Geographic Information Sciences at Penn State includes topics
concerning GIS, cartography, quantitative methods, representation, qualitative
methods, remote sensing, visualization, spatial cognition, and education.
