- The Department of Plant Pathology, Physiology, and Weed Science, Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State University mission is to develop new concepts
and principles as well as to employ novel technologies within our three
disciplines. This mission addresses specific problems at the state, national
and international levels as well as the elucidation of new knowledge and
understanding of biological systems. Our research stimulates and gives
direction to our teaching and extension programs.
The extension mission provides extension agents, growers, commodity groups,
urban and suburban residents, business and industrial interests with
environmentally sustainable and relevant information for use in plant disease
and weed management and provides pest identification and diagnostic services.
The teaching mission is to provide counsel, guidance and a balanced offering of
courses in fundamental and applied plant pathology, physiology and weed science
for undergraduate and graduate student.
