The states, U.S. Territories and Native American tribes have primary
responsibility for protecting their residents from the health risks of
consuming contaminated noncommercially caught fish. They do this by
issuing consumption advisories for the general population as well as
for specific vulnerable subpopulations. These EPA Fish advisories tell
the public when high concentrations of chemical contaminants have been
found in local fish. They also include recommendations to limit or
avoid eating certain fish species from specific waterbodies or
waterbody types.
