- The Roman School of Physics has its origins and its cultural roots in the historic, and somewhat legendary group via Panisperna (named after the street where was located the 'Institute of Physics until the construction of University City in 1935) , born about Enrico Fermi, and includes figures of the stature of Rasetti, Segrè, D'Agostino, Amaldi, Majorana Pontecorvo. The Department of Physics also runs to this cultural tradition in the name, which is dedicated to Edoardo Amaldi.
Currently, the faculty consists of 15 professors, 22 associate professors and 14 researchers and is supported by 16 technical and administrative employees.
Research activities are also held in collaboration with other Departments of the University of Rome (La Sapienza and Tor Vergata) and with Italian and foreign laboratories. Among these are: CERN, INFN Frascati National Laboratories of Gran Sasso and, ESRF in Grenoble, Elettra in Trieste, the 'Astronomical Observatory of Rome and the Institute of Interplanetary Space Physics National Institute of Astrophysics ( INAF), the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the European Space Agency (ESA), the Italian Space Agency (ASI), the IHEP in Beijing, the Tibet University in Lhasa, the Ministry of Culture, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, Didcot, UK, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), etc.. with various activities both pure and applied research.
The close collaboration between the Department Amaldi and other national scientific institutions is evidenced by the presence at the headquarters of the Department itself, the sections of the 'National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), the National Inter-University Consortium for the Physical Sciences Matter (CNISM) in our department hosts the national headquarters and CNR. More than 30 employees of these agencies, researchers, technicians and administrative conduct their activities in the Department. In Roman times there are also a number of industries with particular areas of applied research in telecommunications, space physics, electronics and physics of matter (such as Alenia Telespazio, Selenia). With many of these reports, the Department maintains active collaboration.
The theoretical and experimental research of the Department is divided into the following fields of activity:
1 - Astrophysics
2 - Physics of Matter;
3 - Particle Physics;
4 - Theoretical Physics;
5 - Environment-Terrestrial Physics.
