A Video Plankton Recorder consists of a single video camera and
synchronized strobe that photographs a volume of water at a rate
of 60 Hz. Images are transmitted to the surface via fiber-optic
cable where time-code from a GPS system is added and data are
archived on S-VHS videotape. The video signal is also routed
through a real-time image processing system.
