The Centre for Topographic Information (a part of the Mapping Service
Branch, Earth Sciences Sector, Natural Resources Canada) is to provide
Canadians with topographic and toponymic information to support the
sustainable development of natural resources, environmental protection
and the management of Canadian territory.
As Canada's national topographic mapping agency, the Centre for
Topographic Information is responsible for the acquisition, management
and dissemination of topographic information for the Canadian
landmass. Using information contained in the National Topographic Data
Base, the Centre for Topographic Information produces digital and
hardcopy topographic maps at scales of 1:50 000 and 1:250 000. In
addition, the Centre is the custodian of the federal aerial
photography archives and offers aerial photography reproduction and
distribution services. The Centre also supports the activities of the
Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC), previously known as
Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names through the
provision of a Committee Secretariat.
The Canada Map Office of the Centre for Topographic Information (CTI)
provides warehousing and distribution services for paper map products
of Geomatics Canada. These products include the National Topographic
Series (1:50,000 and 1:250,000 scales), National Atlas of Canada base
map series (various small scales) as well as publications produced by
the Aeronautical Chart Service.
The Sherbrooke office of CTI is responsible for the distribution of
digital topographic products. The National Air Photo Library(NAPL) of
CTI is responsible for the archival and distribution of aerial
photography. The GeoNames Group of CTI maintains and makes available
the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base.
