definition
  • Geological LOng Range Inclined Asdic (GLORIA) is a long range sidescan sonar that was developed in the early 1970's to map seafloor features in the deep ocean. She was developed and operated by the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences, now incorporated into Southampton Oceanography Centre (SOC). But with advances in technology since GLORIA was designed, it's time for her to retire from active service. One of SOC's three GLORIA vehicles, weighing in at 16 tons, left SOC at the end of July for transfer to the Science Museum at Wroughton, near Swindon in Wiltshire. Part of the National Museum of Science and Industry, this is where the large objects from the world of science and technology are stored and can be viewed. [CCMC Online: "http://www.ccmc.nf.ca/"]
