  • Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) BBSO is a full-time solar observatory operated by the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, NJ ("http://www.njit.edu"). The primary telescopes are of 66 cm (26 inch) and 25.4 cm (10inch) diameters, with each telescope carrying two or three optical benches and a variety of associated instruments that can view the Sun virtually simutaneously. Situated on Big Bear Lake, California at an altitude of 2000 m, the site frequently offers good to excellent seeing over long portions the day. The BBSO instruments consist of three optical telescopes: o full-disk (Singer) o medium resolution (10-inch) o and hi-res (26-in) Usually, observations are made in H-alpha (blue, red wings and line center (CL)), in Helium D3 and with the magnetograph. The magnetograph data will have Doppler or transverse fields. Digital or video data are availavable for magnetograph, full-disk and one high resolution. The spectrograph is mounted on the 26 in. telescope. Filters: 6 Halpha, one K-line, one 10830, one 6103 (magnetograph). Detectors used: film, cohu CCD's, one 1024x1024 CCD for hi-res or 10830 work.
