definition
  • ILTS was founded in 1941 as the first research institute affiliated with Hokkaido University to promote interdisciplinary studies on various natural phenomena occurring in the cryosphere. ILTS owes its establishment to the achievements of Dr. Ukichro Nakaya who was the first in the world to create artificial snow crystals. ILTS is now composed of 4 research sections, Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Cryospheric Science, Basic Cryosphere and Boreal Environmental Sciences, and Pan-Okhotsk Research Center. The cryosphere is of special importance to the world and changing rapidly. It is thus essential that we have the latest and best information available regarding ongoing changes in the cryosphere. With a background of tradition of more than half a century, ILTS is now promoting research of natural phenomena in the cryosphere, through various aspects of field and experimental studies.
