The Geo-Facilities Planning and Information Research Center
(GeoPlan) was established in 1984 by Dr. John Alexander in the
Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of
Florida's College of Design, Construction and Planning. The
Center was developed as a response to the need for a teaching
and research environment in Geographic Information Systems, or
GIS.
Since its inception, GeoPlan has become a multidisciplinary GIS
Laboratory. Faculty and Researchers from Planning, Landscape
Architecture, Wildlife Ecology, Forestry, Botany and other
departments utilize the lab's hardware and software to perform
analyses and run models.
The GeoPlan Center's Director is Dr. Paul Zwick, the Co-Director
is Peggy Carr, and the Associate Director is Dr. Richard
Schneider. GeoPlan is managed by a diverse group of Researchers
and Doctoral Students from many disciplines including geography,
engineering, architecture, planning, mathematics, and computer
science. Through assistantships on various projects, Graduate
Students obtain practical work experience using state-of-the-art
computer technology. These students are drawn from the many
colleges and departments throughout the University.
The field of GIS is broad, embracing many disciplines and
involving many types of technology; this is reflected in the
diversity of the research projects and grants attracted by the
GeoPlan Center, and in the diverse interests of the Directors -
from the cutting edge of hardware technology to the latest in
environmental and educational applications. Current and past
research includes contracts and grants from the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Florida Department of
Environmental Protection, Florida Department of Transportation,
Florida Power and Light, Florida Power Corporation, Duke Power
Corporation, Florida Marine Research Institute, U.S. Navy,
Florida Department of Community Affairs, U.S. Forest Service,
Florida Trail Association, Wildlife Conservation Society,
Office of Central American Programs, U.S. Agency for
International Development, St. Johns River Water Management
District, The Nature Conservancy, and numerous counties and
cities throughout the State of Flo rida.
