- Some of the most difficult questions debated by early philosophers were those related to defining TIME. What we know; What we do not know; and, How long we have observed, or have been able to measure important natural phenomena. Mathematics is a fairly powerful means for translating observations about processes, into shareable knowledge, and lies at the base of making defensible forecasts based on fundamental principles. That action is the ultimate goal in 'applied' mathematics, and is the basis of all engineering, astronomy, and physics.
