- The department of Geology at Southern Illinois University is dedicated to
investigation of the chemical, physical, and evolutionary nature and history of
the earth, geology is integral to the resolution of such regional and global
problems as environmental pollution, climate change, flood and earthquake
hazards, adequate reserves of non-renewable energy sources, groundwater
resources and their protection, and the discovery and exploitation of
industrially critical ore deposits. Southern Illinois University Carbondale is
a Carnegie Category II research institution.
