- The Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University is
one of the world's premier graduate research and professional schools for the
interdisciplinary study of the environment, biological, physical and social
sciences.
More than 50 faculty members hold primary or joint appointments in the school.
While maintaining a broad range of expertise, the school is developing
particular areas of strength in the fields of global change, ecosystem science
(forest and wetlands), coastal ecosystem process, environmental health
(response to toxic pollutants) and environmental policy and economics.
The Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences is composed of three
research divisions: (1) Coastal Systems Science and Policy, with focal areas in
marine ecology, estuarine processes, and coastal geology; (2) Earth and Ocean
Sciences, with focal areas in climate change, solid earth processes and surface
processes; (3) Environmental Sciences and Policy, with focal areas in ecosystem
science and management, environmental chemistry and toxicology, aquatic and
atmospheric sciences and environmental social sciences.
