definition
  • At the Paleoceanography laboratory of the Department of Oceanography at the University of Concepción we use the micropaleontological records of plankton (mainly diatoms, silicoflagellates, foraminifers and fish remains) and benthic (mainly foraminifers) communities encoded in the marine sediment archive to study past ocean productivity and climate over time scales of decades to hundreds of thousands of years. In order to use the fossil record to interpret past climatic conditions, it is crucial to assess the quality and accuracy of the information preserved in the sedimentary record. To this end, we also study the transformations associated with the settling of biogenic material from the uppermost layers of the ocean to the seafloor. link to grants and publications.
