- Atmospheric Environment Service: Certain ships of Canadian registry are fitted with this equipment on a loan basis. The cup wheel and wind vane are mounted on either end of a U - shaped arm. This U - arm is mounted as high and as forward on the ship as possible, so that the unit is in a flow of air relatively undisturbed by the ship's superstructure. The instrument requires 115 volt, 60 cycle power to operate the direction unit. The speed unit supplies its own power by means of a small permanent magnet generator which is operated by the rotating cup wheel. The wind speed and direction dials are mounted in a small cabinet located conveniently in the chart room or wheel house. The wind speed dial is calibrated in nautical miles per hour, from 0 to 1 00 knots. The wind direction dial is calibrated in tens of degrees from 01 0? to 360?. The direction indicated by the dial will be the direction of the apparent wind in relation to the heading of the ship, and not to north. Thus an indication of 360? represents an apparent wind from dead ahead; 090?, a wind on the starboard beam; 180?, a wind from dead astern; and 270?, a wind from the port beam.
