    A lithosphere (from Ancient Greek λίθος (líthos) 'rocky', and σφαίρα (sphaíra) 'sphere') is the rigid, outermost rocky shell of a terrestrial planet or natural satellite. On Earth, it is composed of the crust and the portion of the upper mantle that behaves elastically on time scales of up to thousands of years or more. The crust and upper mantle are distinguished on the basis of chemistry and mineralogy.

    リソスフェア（リソスフィア）(lithosphere) とは、岩石圏、岩圏とも呼ばれ、地球の地殻とマントル最上部の固い岩盤を併せた部分の総称である。プレートとほぼ同じ。ただし、もともとプレートテクトニクスにおいて、「プレート」は剛体（いかなる力が加わっても決して変形しない理想的な物体）として定義されているのに対して、「リソスフェア（リソスフィア）」という言葉は地球表面で弾性体として挙動する部分を指す。
