  • Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a by-product of biological activity of a symbiotic bacteria living in leguminous plant roots. This is a principal greenhouse gas that absorbs in the infrared wavelength region and unfortunately falls in an IR "window" between IR absorbing features of water and carbon dioxide (a characteristic of all the "trace" greenhouse gases with significant radiative forcing).     Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous, nitro, or NOS  is a chemical compound with the formula N2O. It is an oxide of nitrogen. At room temperature, it is a colorless, non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet odor and taste. It is used in surgery and dentistry for its anaesthetic and analgesic effects. It is known as "laughing gas" due to the euphoric effects of inhaling it, a property that has led to its recreational use as a dissociative anaesthetic. It is also used as an oxidizer in rocket propellants, and in motor racing to increase the power output of engines. At elevated temperatures, nitrous oxide is a powerful oxidizer similar to molecular oxygen. Nitrous oxide gives rise to nitric oxide (NO) on reaction with oxygen atoms, and this NO in turn reacts with ozone. As a result, it is the main naturally occurring regulator of stratospheric ozone. It is also a major greenhouse gas and air pollutant. Considered over a 100-year period, it is calculated to have between 265 and 310 times more impact per unit mass (global-warming potential) than carbon dioxide. It is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines, the most important medications needed in a health system.

    亜酸化窒素(あさんかちっそ、英: nitrous oxide)または、一酸化二窒素(いっさんかにちっそ)は、窒素酸化物の一種である。吸入すると陶酔効果があることから笑気ガス(しょうきガス、英: laughing gas)とも呼ばれる。医薬品医療機器法に基づく指定薬物(後述) 工業的には、燃料の発火促進に使われる。食材をムース状にする調理法のエスプーマに用いられる。医療的には笑気麻酔に用いられる。世界保健機関の必須医薬品の一覧に載せられている。 紫外線により分解されるなどして一酸化窒素を生成するため、亜酸化窒素の増加もオゾン層破壊につながる。 乱用の項にあるように、亜酸化窒素ガスの乱用が後を絶たない事から厚生労働省は2016年02月18日に医薬品医療機器法に基づき、「亜酸化窒素」を指定薬物に指定した。同月28日から医療などの目的以外に製造や販売、所持、使用することなどが禁止されることになった。
